There’s nothing more civilized than enjoying a cup of afternoon tea on a sea day. One of the many included amenities on a cruise is afternoon tea at sea, which provides a respite after a few port stops in the sun, such as Half Moon Cay. On Holland America Line’s Nieuw Amsterdam, tea time offered the perfect opportunity to sit in a relaxed space and soak in the quiet moments of being at sea, even while surrounded by others.
The scheduled tea time and location on board any cruise ship can be found in the daily activities newsletter that is left in a passenger’s stateroom during the previous evening’s turndown service. On the Nieuw Amsterdam, tea was served in the Ocean Bar.
Tea service begins promptly on time, and it is recommended to secure a seat a few minutes early. Seating can be limited. There are intimate tables for two and quiet corners for couples and friends.
There isn’t a selection of tea to choose from during this service, with servers pouring a basic black hot tea. However, the nibbles more than make up for the lack of tea variety.
One detail I noticed (and enjoyed) was the silver utensils engraved with the Holland America Line logo. I found this to be a nice touch. Of course, the sandwiches, scones, and sweets were a tasty afternoon delight, as well.
Of course, not everyone is a fan of tea, or maybe they prefer a different type of hot beverage in the afternoon. In the buffet area of the Lido Deck is a wide selection of teas. There’s also room service, which is also included in the cruise itself, and a pot of coffee can be delivered to a guest’s stateroom to enjoy in privacy.
