Growing up in Baton Rouge along the banks of the Mississippi River, I always dreamed of castles and faraway lands. The closest I had ever gotten to what I thought was a real castle was this Gothic architectural treasure sitting high on a Bluff overlooking Old Man River. I thought there had to be a princess that lived there at some point.
While there may not have been princes and princesses that graced the halls of this historic building, The Louisiana Old State Capitol was, and still is the setting for many romantic rendezvous and fancy balls. What once was the place where the laws were argued, today this graceful building has been renovated and is not only an educational facility, but also a beautiful destination for a romantic Southern wedding.
Visitors to Baton Rouge today can take a stroll around downtown, making their way towards the levee of the mighty Mississippi, and they might even find themselves caught up in the romance of the South to stop for gentle kiss in front of this great Southern Castle. And if you happen to pass by at dusk, be sure to look for the ghosts said to still haunt the grounds.
