Road trippers and weekend drivers taking a rural highway in Central Louisiana might come along this small, unassuming lunchroom in Lecompte, Louisiana. It might be hard to imagine, but this country diner is home to world famous pies and ham and cheese sandwiches. Lea’s Lunchroom has been serving good, Southern fare since 1928.
Visitors drive hours just to purchase one of the fresh baked pies before they run out for the day, or even to enjoy one of the home cooked Southern meals that are highlighted on the daily special chalkboard. They offer a variety of pies daily, but for me, I always go for the classic, Southern, chocolate pie.
One afternoon, I took a drive from Baton Rouge to Natchitoches and stopped at Lea’s for some comfort food. That day there were serving Southern fried catfish, baked sweet potato, greens, rice and gravy, and corn muffins. Of course, I finished my meal off with a tall slice of Chocolate meringue pie before head back on the highway, enjoying the back roads and farmland of rural Louisiana.
Should you decide to venture that way, be sure to call ahead and make sure they are open for the day.
